rome italyAn afternoon was not long enough to see everything at the Vatican City, so we had to choose which part to visit. After an early start leaving the UK we landed in Rome where we were to spend the first three days and two nights of our magical and unforgettable honeymoon. Over the centuries, traditional dishes like - coda alla vaccinara' (oxtail cooked with wine, tomatoes and peppers), 'pajata' (veal's offal cooked in a tomato sauce), 'abbacchio alla scottadito' (grilled lamb chop) and 'trippa alla romana' (Roman style tripe), have come to be considered as delicacies and are eaten by even the most refined palates.

Locals usually ends their meals with a cup of 'espresso' coffee or a glass of 'sambuca', a sweet liqueur sipped with three coffee beans to munch on. As we stumbled (after our gorgeous lunch) through the streets of Rome we came upon a huge crowd of tourists gathered around an opening. One tip we learnt is that the Italian families seemed to go out to restaurants later at night than us English, so going for an early table would avoid disappointment as whole families tended to arrive on mass later in the evening, even in the week.

It is only when I am visiting my folks back in my home country that I truly feel alive. Another three courses later and a romantic walk through the quaint, historic streets led us back to our hotel for an early night. After a short walk around to what seemed like the back of the Vatican City, we reached the entrance to the Sistine Chapel tour. Reached by one of the world's most beautiful bridges - Bernini's billowing, angel-clad Ponte Sant' Angelo - this strange, circular tank of a building was originally constructed as the mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian.

On entering, the corridors of architecture, sculptures and decorations were mind blowing and served as a gentle build up to the unforgettable Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. Italy delights the eyes and heightens the senses. It has pony-cart rides and rowboats you can rent and a zoo called the 'Bioparco' which is in the northeast section of the park.

If you really want to go the extra mile, Rome is also notable for lenten raisin buns called 'maritozzi', cream-filled pastries called 'bigne', rum-soaked fruit and nut cake called 'pan giallo', and a custard cake drenched with syrupy liqueurs known as 'zuppa inglese' (thoug's neither soup nor English).

However children aged six and over will enjoy visiting this eternal city just as much as their parents. I wholeheartedly agree with Miss Jong. The food is good and the view is stupendous. Public toilets are as rare as hen's teeth. Traditional Roman cuisine stems from a time when people cannot afford a meal made with meat, and therefore had to use offal, which at that time was definitely more affordable.

We stayed at the City Hotel, which is literally a stone's throw from the Spanish steps. Then it was back to the hotel to freshen up before an early dinner at another of Rome's excellent restaurants. Well, it was the first night of our honeymoon and we had been up since 4. The whole tour was an absolutely breathtaking experience.

Now the dreaded map came into use again, although this time it wasn't really needed. The sound of running water could be heard, and as we climbed the steps of an adjacent building we turned to see the Trevi Fountain in all its splendour and theatrical presence. The Castle Sant'Angelo Snack Bar is a great, casual eatery and a wonderful place to break from a day of sightseeing.

Kids enjoy the wide circular ramp leading up to the different levels of the castle, looking at the nice views of the district from the different terraces and visiting the museum inside which contains armour and weaponry. Also, many of the streets are still ancient cobblestone, which makes it quite a bumpy ride for sleeping babies and also difficult to navigate with a pushchair.

The Italians sure know how to cook and eat their food. Another fun place to take children to is Castel Sant'Angelo. Another problem is the lack of public restrooms and/or changing areas in which to perform diaper-changing duties. The Villa Borghese is Rome's sprawling central park and is a wonderful place to take children.

Whether it is the aroma of a freshly poured espresso, the taste of exquisite porcini mushrooms or the sound of distant church bells, you notice every one of life's details when in Italy. If you're stuck there's many McDonald Restaurants in Rome where you can have a toilet stop and an ice-cream!

Try to time your toilet stops with lunch and dinner and use the facilities of a well-heeled bar or restaurant. Children are perhaps most amused if visiting Rome during December and the Christmas holidays. And because of its richness in history, monuments and ancient places like museums which itself tells each and every chapter of the history, Rome is ranked as the world's third most visited tourist place. But before we fling ourselves headlong into an unbridled romance with contemporary Italy, I want to take a moment to remember that Italy's vibrant culture today has been born out of Italy's long illustrious history.

Among Italy's many distinctions, amidst the ebb and flow of her fortunes, her political highs and lows, shines a moment in history like no other. 'Gricia' is similar to 'amatriciana' but without tomatoes and 'gnocchi' (little round squishy pasta balls made out of potato with a tomato sauce and Parmesan or pecorino) is a favorite for Thursday dinner.

The Spanish Steps provided a wonderful photo opportunity for all joining the Piazza di Spagna with the church of Trinita dei Monti with its two towers that dominate the skyline.

Photo opportunities were a plenty, with guides dressed as Roman Gladiators, ruins and the Arch of Constantine (Arco di Costantino) all within easy reach of the Colosseum. The interior of the gallery is so beautiful that the visitors by no means can never miss the chance of taking the snaps and keep the memories of this beautiful building with them for a lifetime.

Rome is one of the cities of the world which has a rich history, and literature. Its history of construction is dated back from the times of 341 AD. from conquerors to conquered. In the afternoon we took a long but very pleasurable walk along the River Tiber, through small market stalls that line the way and onto St Peters Square and the Vatican City (Citta del Vaticano).
