Nine Ways to Guard Against Chocolate Dog
por Jerrell Weiner (09-06-2023)
Labradors are often referred to as the perfect breed for a family because they are gentle, protective, and abundantly friendly. Regardless of your Lab’s coloration, your pup will be full of life and positivity, and they’re bound to bring you and your family happiness and laughter for many years. The problem is finding one with the best chances of staying healthy through the years. Whether your pup belongs to one of the major three Lab colors or is a rarer coloration, coat care will be about the same across the board. The rarest of the three major Labrador colors, the Chocolate Lab is beautiful and adorable with a deep brown, chocolate-colored coat. Red Labs, commonly referred to as Red Fox Labs, have a deep red coat that resembles that of a fox. White Labradors are usually genetically identical to Yellow Labs just like Red Labs are, but their coat is the lighter extreme on the Yellow Lab color spectrum.
Yellow Labs can have a pretty wide range of coloration, and two other Lab colors we’ll discuss later are really just extremes of the Yellow Lab color spectrum. These dogs are not a different genetic coloration at all but rather the extreme of the Yellow Lab’s color spectrum. Yellow Labs often have a very light brown or tan colored coat that can appear yellowish. Silver Labs are really Chocolate Labs, even though they may look more like Blue Labs, but their coat is light or diluted, and the result is a silvery appearance. They’re regarded as the friendliest of the Labs, but again this isn’t substantiated by any research. Some people believe that Black Labs are the calmest and most affectionate of the Labrador breed, but there isn’t any research to back this up. Apparently, too many people were placing prank calls in Louisiana and ordering bunches of pizzas for unsuspecting customers, because now it's illegal to do so. Chocolate has a reputation of providing people with antioxidants and soothing stress, but chocolate is one treat that is not to be shared with our furry companions.
The treatment process may involve making the dog vomit, flushing out the stomach through a procedure called gastric lavage, administering activated charcoal, or providing supportive and symptomatic care for more severe symptoms. Their absence from service dog institutions may also be due to the fact that Chocolate Labs experience more health problems and tend to have shorter lifespans than their Black and Yellow counterparts. Like their chocolate siblings, Silver Labs, unfortunately, inherit some additional health issues and tend to live shorter lives than Black and Yellow Labradors. On average, Chocolate Labs live about a year and a half shorter than other colored Labs. Due to random chance, Black Labs make up nearly half of all Labradors. Milk chocolate is mostly sugar and fat so while it may make your dog sick, it is not terribly dangerous. Dark Chocolate - is higher and contains 179 mg per ounce. One ounce of milk chocolate per pound of body weight is a potentially lethal dose in dogs.
In some cases, repeat administrations of charcoal are necessary, but in others, just one dose will do it. You will never have to worry about this breed around young children or strangers, but they also aren’t afraid to stand up to a threat and protect you if the need arises. On the plus side, obviously Labs need no trimming! Have you gone over to the dark side, or are you still hanging out on the lighter side of things? If your dog eats chocolate it will usually vomit or have diarrhea, which is actually good because that will get the chocolate out of your dog’s system faster. Of course, sometimes dogs get into candy poisoning symptoms and cake without your knowledge. If you were lucky enough to catch them as they just started, a nibble here, or a few licks, you might get away with a belly ache and frequent trips to the potty (trust me, nature calls at least once an hour).
